Report of the Committee for the Examination of Gender Composition at the Hebrew University

Appendix No. 4 - Representation of Women in the Small Senate (From the Minutes of the Standing Committee, June 1, 2004)
The members of the Standing Committee were handed a proposal for representation of women in the small Senate, formulated by the members of the Committee for the Examination of Gender Composition at the Hebrew University: to aspire to a situation in which the percentage of women in the small Senate, including University officers, will be equal to the percentage of women at the rank of Full Professor plus 5%.
The Committee agreed on the following points:
1. No mechanisms will be introduced at this stage to ensure the representation of women in the small Senate, but a number of steps will be taken which will hopefully help attain the desired representation.
2. The quota for each Faculty will be calculated (on the basis of the percentage of women Full Professors in each Faculty + 5%) to determine the minimum number of women desired for election (“base number”).
3. The Dean of each Faculty will be responsible for explaining the importance of nominating women candidates to the small Senate and of electing the minimum percentage of women.
The results of the elections in each Faculty will be brought to the Standing Committee. If the results are below expectations, the Committee will determine what steps to take towards the elections in the General Assembly of the Senate. If the need arises, correction mechanisms may be instituted.
