Britain's Attorney General, the Right Honorable Baroness Scotland of Asthal QC will speak at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem today on 'Lawfare – Time for Rules of Engagement?'
The Baroness Patricia Janet Scotland is the first woman hold the office of Attorney General since its foundation in 1315.
''The expression 'Lawfare' is intended, among other things, for application in judicial procedures within the framework of international conflict. In general, this involves an attempt by one of the sides of the conflict to bring political or military leaders of the other side to criminal trial within the judicial system of a third state or an international tribunal,'' explains Dean of the Faculty of Law Prof. Barak Medina. ''A judicial decision in Britain a few weeks ago to issue an arrest warrant against former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni will make the lecture current and particularly interesting.''
The lecture is part of the Lionel Cohen Lecture Series that has been running in the Faculty of Law since 1953. The annual lecture is presented by a senior figure from the British justice system, government or world of academia, and is published in the Israel Law Review.
The lecture will take place at 6.30 p.m., January 5, 2010, in the Maiersdorf Faculty Club, Mount Scopus campus.
