Research Abstract:
Before and during the Russo-Japanese war (1904-5), the Japanese
Ministry of Education published school songbooks containing songs on
the war. Starting with an apologetic justification of the war, the
songs proceed to glorify the heroism and victories of the Japanese
soldiers. Since Japanese schoolbooks were designed to reflect the
official policy of the government, this research attempts to
investigate the pupils' indoctrination of militarism and colonialism
in relation to the ideologies that led to Japan's role in subsequent
wars.
