Research Abstract:
We have studied the genetic relationship among cereals, cereal-like
amaranthus and other plants through electrophoretic and
isoelectrophoretic patterns of proteins. We found that the major
prolamin fraction in corn, sorghum, potato and cassava was monomeric
with MW subunits of 20-45kd. In prolamins a single sequence was
observed suggesting that prolamin homology arose through duplication
and mutation of a single ancestral gene. Prolamin sequence analyses
can predict evolutionary relationships of cereals.
New methods were used for this study such as differential scanning
calorimetry, circular dichroism, fluorometry, sequence analysis,
blotting, microscopy.
