Elena Kagan, a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, visited the Hebrew University of Jerusalem on Thursday, July 5. Among other things, Kagan and Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben-Sasson discussed the Hebrew University's centrality to the Israeli legal system, and whether the state of Israel needs and will develop a formal constitution.

Ben-Sasson said, ''The Hebrew University continues to be not just the major supplier of justices to Israel's Supreme Court, but also an essential source of legal knowledge and education.'' He added that several former justices and chief justices of Israel's Supreme Court are actively involved with the Hebrew University as educators and members of committees.

Kagan also met with Law Faculty Dean Prof. Barak Medina, and visited the Law Faculty's Legal Clinics and Minerva Center for Human Rights.

Kagan is the U.S. Supreme Court's 112th justice and its fourth female justice.
