Ranked 57th in the world, Only Israeli university to make the top 100 list
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 57th in a list of the world's top 100 universities
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has been ranked 57th in a list of the world's top 100 universities, conducted annually by Shanghai Jiaotong University in China.
This year, the university climbed 15 places from its position to last year, and received the highest ranking since 2003. The Hebrew University was the only Israeli university to be listed in the ranking of the top 100 universities. Topping the list were American universities, Harvard, Stanford and MIT.
In addition to the general ranking, universities were also ranked according to field. In natural sciences and mathematics, the Hebrew University ranked 35th in the world; in social sciences the Hebrew University ranked 52-76.
In the section of the ranking dealing with individuals academic subjects, the Hebrew University ranked 22nd in the world in mathematics, 26th in computer science, and in the 51st – 75th in physics.
Hebrew University President Prof. Menahem Ben - Sasson said that he was glad that the Hebrew University continues to star in the top 100 universities in the world and climbed 15 places since last year. ''I hope that the processes which strengthen the university through the recognition it is receiving from the international scientific community consider it an important partner in leading the world's research agenda''. Ben-Sasson added, ''The fact that we climbed so high in the ranking highlights the outstanding work of the university's researchers and - so my pride and gratitude.''
Every year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University evaluates more than 2,000 universities in the world and ranks the top 500 among them. The rankings are based on a combined scale of academic criteria that include awards won by alumni and staff, articles published in leading scientific journals, and the number of highly cited researchers. The Chinese university’s rankings have achieved respected international recognition.
