Don Harran, Professor in the Department of Musicology at Hebrew University, has been made Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity (Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana).
Prof. Harran was named for the award in November 2005 by Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the then President of the Italian Republic. The honor is in recognition of Don Harran’s distinguished contribution to Italian musical scholarship.
The award ceremony took place on June 5, 2006, in conjunction with the festivities to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the Italian Republic, at a reception in the private residence of Italian Ambassador to Israel, His Excellency Sandro De Bernardin.
Professor Harran is internationally recognized for his work on Italian music of the fifteenth to early eighteenth centuries. He was cited by the Ambassador for his innovative research on word-tone relations in music and on the place of Jewish musicians, theorists and composers in early Italian culture.
